When two people decide to get a divorce, it isn't a sign that they "don't understand" one another, but a sign that they have, at last, begun to.

Divorce/Couples Mediation
Unfortunately, despite our initial dreams, hopes, and best efforts at the time, committed relationships may come to an end. Often though, couples have a continuing need for a working relationship or significant future contact. This is especially true for parents, who have the best interests of their children at heart. Divorce mediation offers an opportunity to make the best of a difficult situation. The result of divorce mediation is a mutually acceptable agreement that meets the needs of each person, and the needs of their children. As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Grether is keenly aware of the underlying needs of minor children, and ensures that they are fully addressed.
Wisdom of Mediation
In traditional divorce proceedings, each spouse retains an attorney to be their vigorous advocate. From this inherently adversarial process, communications are strained, feelings are bruised, and attorney fees drain community assets. Additionally, as of January 1, 2005, many registered domestic partners looking to formally end their relationship will also be subject to marriage dissolution procedures.
Mediation with Dr. Grether offers a private, more cooperative, future-oriented way of reaching a livable agreement. Agreements made during mediation are designed by the people involved to meet the unique needs of their family. This personal involvement bestows a sense of control that is absent in litigated divorces. Additionally, you can expect a financial savings of 66% to 88% over traditional divorce.
Process of Mediation
Mediation with Dr. Grether fosters a cooperative working relationship from the very beginning. In successive 90-minute sessions, we review all the areas that need to be addressed, ranging from property division and spousal support to parenting plans and child support. Relevant legal information is provided to keep you informed.
Some agreements are easily made, while creative solutions are developed to resolve more difficult issues. We engage in a thoughtful decision-making process, mindful of future implications. All decisions and agreements are temporary until the final Memorandum of Understanding/Marital Settlement Agreement is signed as a binding legal document.
Outside experts, such as, tax accountants, financial advisors, real estate agents, or appraisers, are often consulted. Each person is encouraged to engage a consulting attorney to review documents prior to signing. An impartial attorney prepares and files all court documents. Mediation can take from 3 to 12 sessions depending upon the complexity of your situation.
